Word for a Broken Nation: A Play about the Gettysburg Address

In honor of Presidents Day, students from the morning English as a Second Language class presented a short play to their fellow English students and to the morning High School Equivalency class and OIC staff. In preparing for their performance, students learned about slavery in the US, the Civil War, Gettysburg the city and battlefield and Abraham Lincoln.

Deeqo played Abraham Lincoln.

Johanna, Luis and Rahina were the chorus who recited the most famous and meaningful words in American history: government of the people, by the people and for the people.

The play received rave reviews from all, including the participants. The ESL Players are enthusiastic about doing another play some time.

Armand narrated the play, setting the scene in 1863 and the dedication of a cemetery in Gettysburg, PA. Pablo played Edward Everett, another speaker that day, who admitted that Lincoln said in two minutes what Everett tried to say in two hours

Trip To The Pennsylvania Farm Show

The morning English as a Second Language class wrote this about visiting the Pennsylvania Farm Show:
"On Thursday, January 11, we went to the Farm Show. The teachers and students went together on the school bus. When we got there, the bus dropped us off. We visited the animals like cows, sheep, chickens, rabbits, horses, and goats. We saw the calves being born and many people took pictures. The students and teachers bought food like French fries, milk shakes, honey, donuts, pizza, lemonade, cotton candy, mushrooms, juice, pie, and hot pepper sauce. We walked a lot at the Farm Show. After that, we came back to school at 11:30."

Yu Hui, Telesfora, Fatima, Erick, Mina, Jheni, Hibo, Souad and Halima are some of the ESL students that went to the Farm Show.

The man is working with wood to make tools for the kitchen.

Our Visits To The State Museum

The morning English as a Second Language class wrote this about visiting the State Museum.

“In October, our class was in the museum when the fire alarm went on.  We had to evacuate the building.  We waited outside for 45 minutes.  Then the teacher called the school bus to pick us up.  When we were waiting, we saw the police and the firefighters.  When the teacher and students arrived at school, we said goodbye until the next class.  We didn’t like leaving the museum. 

On November 16, for the second time the class went to the museum and this time we could enjoy the tour.  We saw fossils of dinosaurs, antique cars and many interesting things from the history of Pennsylvania.  The class watched a video of the Delaware Indians story.  We shopped at the Christmas market.  We took a lot of pictures in the museum and enjoyed the tour.”

We liked shopping in the market. The man is working on making wooden spoons.

We liked the animals, the dinosaurs and the Indian village homes. We walked too much!

Celebration of Success - Graduation 2017

The OIC Graduation Ceremonies were held at the Zion Assembly Church in Harrisburg. The ceremony was held on Saturday, October 21, 2017. Fifty-six students received their high school equivalency certificates (GED/HiSET). Families, friends and supporters helped to celebrate their great accomplishment.
